Riesling Erstes Gewächs
Analyse: Alc.: 12,99 %vol, Ac.: 7,4 g/l, RS.: 8,4 g/l Geschmack: A pale yellow coloured Riesling with light green reflexes. Its bouquet appears mature with a good structure. Very high toned and rather austere on the nose but with very attractive hazelnut core in the middle. At the palate it occurs very clear and juicy. This is a convincing and vital wine, quite assertive but with lots of flavour in dry Erstes Gewächs idiom with a pleasant length. Needs food with all this texture but a punchy bottle of wine.

Grape production This site near the Rhine River is named after the chapel of Sankt Bartholome, which lies on the western edge of the town of Winkel. The water’s balancing effect on day and night temperatures make this site one of the warmest in the entire Rheingau. The 2.8 ha of vineyards belonging to the wine estate (the site comprises a total of 26 ha) are cultivated solely with Riesling. The soil com-prises mainly deep loess, although gravel and moist loess and loam also can be found. The wines tend to feature a filigree character, and the elegant acidity supports good storage capacity. Wine production The wine harvest took place from October till November. For getting fresh fruit of the wine an intensive negatively selection was needed. The grapes were then carefully pressed in the grape reception station of the estate. The fermentation in cooled high-grade steel tanks underlines again the freshness and the fruitiness of the wine. Clearly recognizable is that the wines mature on the lees. Thereby they intensify their aroma and create a well-balanced and very tender gustatory effect. The year 2008 After a mild winter the bud-burst started end of April. May was relating to heat and sunshine duration comparable to June, which of course was activating the progression of the vines. It was a very short margin between the proliferation and the flowering, so that the canopy management was very demanding. The welcome precipitations in June were followed by a lot of rainfall in July and August. A cool and cloudy September restrained the ripening process. The grape harvest began end of October with a steady change of rainy days and calm autumnal weather. In order to that we needed courage to await and let the vintage endure despite the unsettled weather conditions. But in the end we were rewarded with high-class wines, fine-linked, vivid with a fresh acidity, a pleasant fruitiness and characteristic flavours. The First Growth The First Growth is representing the premium segment our wine pyramid. Strict cultivation and producing criteria as well as a second sensory control are the parameter for the born quality from the vineyards which is indispensable counting. Noticeable for the first growth is a substantial taste and the classical Rheingauer Schlegelbottle. Also the award on the label “Erstes Gewächs” with the three romanic double archs. | |
